EVELYN

I was still shocked at seeing Damian standing in my house and confused as to why he was so angry. I had no idea what he was talking about, but his accusatory tone immediately made my own anger flare. Max picked up on my energy and began to hiss. He put himself firmly between me and Damian, and I knew I would need to be careful not to give the wrong cues to him.

“I don’t know what you are talking about,” I said, my voice clipped and short. “But beyond that, I don’t owe you any explanations.” He was so close to me, I was starting to feel overwhelmed, but in a good way. He had a lot of nerve showing up out of the blue like this and setting me back from the progress I’d made at trying to put him in my rearview mirror. His rejection of me had hurt more this time than all those years ago, primarily because I had a very good idea of how we could be together.

I stayed silent, and that seemed to take Damian off guard. He stepped back and examined me from head to toe. Why? From all outward appearances, there was nothing wrong with me. The bullet I had taken had given me a superficial wound because the goal had not been to kill me, rather, just to scare me, based on what I had learned from the police. All it had done was make me that much more determined to blow the lid off of abuse and assault on campuses. I certainly hadn’t contacted Damian about my injury, and no one else would have. Travis didn’t have his number, and he would not have gone through my phone without permission.

“I repeat, I don’t owe you any explanations. If all you came to do was accuse me of bullshit, then you know how to see yourself out.”

“How bad were you hurt?” he asked. I lifted my chin defiantly, but stayed silent. I was beginning to resent his presence more and more, primarily because it hurt me to see him. He looked like shit. Dark circles under his eyes. He was exhausted. I couldn’t let myself be sucked into caring because I would unravel more than I currently was. Max’s demeanor had changed from anger to concern because he knew I was upset. He rubbed his face against my ankles, looked up at me, and cried. With a sigh, I picked him up, burying my face in his neck. I needed the reassurance as much as he did.

“You are going to tell me, Sunshine. Why the hell did you put yourself in danger after I specifically told you not to?!”

I placed the cat back down on the floor because things were about to get ugly. “I am going to tell you nothing more than to get the fuck out of my house. I don’t know why you’re here, and I don’t care. You wanted me out of your hair. I honored that.
